What is a strawberry full moon? Everything you need to know about tonight's lunar event

If you look tonight, you can see that the moon it looks particularly large and bright in the night sky.


That's because tonight's moon is not an old moon – it's a strawberry full moon!

The lunar event occurs when the Moon is located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun.

This means that the face of our lunar satellite is fully illuminated, making the moon appear particularly bright in the night sky.


Although this full moon is called the Strawberry Full Moon, our lunar satellite will not appear pink or red, as you might expect.

Instead, the name was chosen by Native American tribes because it indicated the time of year to harvest ripe fruit.


NASA explained: “Maine Farmer's Almanac first published Indian names for full moons in the 1930s. According to this almanac, the full moon in June or the last full moon in spring is known as the Strawberry Moon, a universal name for virtually all Algonquin tribes.

"The name comes from the relatively short season for picking strawberries in northeastern North America."

You can also hear this full moon being called the Mead Moon or Honey Moon.


NASA added: “Mead is a drink created by fermenting honey mixed with water, sometimes with fruits, spices, grains or hops.


"The tradition of calling the first month of marriage a & # 39; honeymoon & # 39; dates back to at least the 1500s and may be linked to this full moon, either because of the custom of getting married in June or because the "honeymoon" is the "sweetest" "moon of the year.

"Some writings suggest that the summer solstice season, at the end of June, was when the honey was ripe and ready to be harvested from the hives or from nature, which made the moon the sweetest."

The Strawberry Full Moon will appear tonight and will officially peak at 20:12 BST.

However, it should be visible all night. Sunset is scheduled for 9:11 pm (Brasília time) this evening.
