SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – A Utah man was charged after authorities said his vehicle started a fire that damaged a stone reserve near Lake Utah and injured a passenger.
Authorities accused Dominic Deros, 21, of transgression and crime, both offenses, after police said he started the fire while trying to circumvent a roadblock caused by an existing fire, The Salt Lake Tribune newspaper reported on Tuesday. -market.
A passenger suffered severe burns and was flown to the University of Utah Burn Center for treatment after the fire burned Deros's vehicle, officials said.
Police say Deros pulled off a road near Provo to escape an obstacle built as a result of a fire that started on June 28 and forced the evacuation of more than 13,000 people.
Utah County Sheriff Sergeant. Spencer Cannon says that Deros crossed a fence 23 miles south of Saratoga Springs.
Cannon says that Deros cut the fence to enter the Adelbert Doyle Smith Family Archaeological Reserve. and the heat of Deros's vehicle ignited a dry brush in a rut inside the reserve.
Strong winds pushed the flames towards a house south of the reserve. Emergency crews cut lines to stop the fire from progressing.
Police say the fire also hampered efforts to tackle the larger fire-threatening subdivisions in the southern Saratoga Springs area.
The court documents did not list a lawyer for Deros.
