US and Mexico coordinating on plan to restrict travel across the border

State Secretary Mike Pompeo and Secretary of State Marcelo Ebrard discussed the plans during a conversation Thursday, according to a statement from Foreign Ministry spokesman Morgan Ortagus.

"Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo spoke today with Mexican Secretary of State Marcelo Luis Ebrard Casaubon to coordinate a plan to limit non-essential travel across our shared border in response to the COVID-19 pandemic," Ortagus said.

"The two leaders discussed the importance of creating a unified North American strategy to reduce the public health risk to our communities and to more effectively meet increasing challenges together," she added. "They also discussed ways to reduce the negative impact of the COVID-19 crisis on the economy and to prioritize continuing essential trade and cross-border trade."

Pompeo said on Twitter that he had "worked closely" with his Mexican counterpart "on travel restrictions that balance protecting our citizens from further transmission of # COVID19."
