Franschhoek is considered the food capital of South Africa. It has some of the best wine farms and restaurants in the country. You will be surprised how much can you do in this small town. It is not all about wine and meals. For lovers of adventure and outdoor activities, there are several hiking and mountain biking trails around the city. The best way to spend a weekend here is to arrive Friday night and stay until Sunday to have enough time to explore, taste and enjoy the area.

Wine tasting is the main activity here, but there are many other things to do in and out of the city like hiking, mountain biking and road cycling. Stellenbosch is a university town, there are many bars and clubs that are open all night. It is a better place for a romantic getaway for younger couples than Franschhoek. Couples looking for some peace and quiet can also find the perfect place for them in Stellenbosch. There are many stunning wine farms in the area that offer tasting, meals and accommodation on their properties.

Cape Peninsula

This unit is one of our favorite weekends things to do in Cape Town. We have traveled this path many times and whenever there is something new to see or do. The Cape Town road trip is the shortest of the five suggested weekend trips, but there are many amazing places along the way to keep you busy throughout the weekend.

Start your day at Sea Point and continue driving along the coast Camps Bay to Hout Bay. Don't forget to stop at Maiden's Cove parking lot for beautiful views of Camps Bay and the Twelve Apostles. At the Hout Bay go to the port, you can always see a couple of seals there. As an option, you can go on a snorkel tour with seals, it's really fun! From Hout Bay, continue along the coast towards Kommetjie, following the spectacular Chapman's Peak Drive. There are several observation points along the route where you can park your car.

After all the driving, it's time to stretch your legs. Cape Point National Park it's a great place to do that. The area is absolutely beautiful. You can spend hours exploring the park. Don't forget to visit Cabo da Boa Esperança, Praia de Dias and Farol Antigo.

From Cape Point drive to Boulders Beach in the city of Simon. You can stay in Simon's Town for one night, there are many great accommodation options or continue driving to Muizenberg and overnight there.

The next day, on the way back to the city, you can stop at some wineries in Constantia and do a wine tasting. To end the weekend trip, visit Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden where you can have a picnic on the grass. In the summer, every Sunday evening, there is an outdoor sunset concert in the Garden, which is a perfect end to the weekend.

This beautiful coastline drive to the southernmost point in Africa can be done in two days. Start on Saturday morning from Cape Town, pass Gordon Bay along the coast. Stop at one of the viewpoints to take pictures and catch sight of cape seals or southern right whales if traveling between July and September. Take a walk to Crystal Pools at Kogelberg Nature Reserve (book in advance) or Botanical garden Harold Porter. Visit the penguin colony at Stony Point Nature Reserve in Betty's Bay. Stop for lunch and wine tasting Hermanus, pass through the small town of Elim. Stop at Black Oystercatcher taste more wine or craft beer. The west coast it is something different and special; an endless coastline, spacious and airy combination, incredible bright blue and white colors. A great place to come if you need to think, relax and recharge. And, of course, try freshly cooked and cooked seafood and fish in the best possible way.

To start the day, stop for breakfast overlooking the sea in Big Bay. We love going to Ons Huisie and Blue Peter for a Saturday breakfast. From Big Bay, continue along the coast Melkbosstrand towards Langebaan. Stop at West Coast National Park. It is a great place for bird watching and one of the best places in Namaqualand to come in the spring and see the fields covered with thousands of flowers. There are some mountain biking and hiking trails within the park.

After lunch, visit Cape Columbine Nature Reserve. End the day at St.Helena Bay. Definitely go to the lighthouse at Shelly Point, a beautiful place with sandy beaches, surrounded by huge boulders. The waters around Shelly Point they are full of life in the few hours we spent on a boat, we saw many dolphins and seals, two whales, hundreds or sea birds and a sunfish sometimes.

Route 62

  • Total distance – 490 km, return from Cape Town to Barrydale
  • Best season – September – December and March – May are the best months. In winter it is rainy and cold. In January – February, it is very hot.

Driving the full route to Port Elizabeth for a weekend is too much, most of the time you drive. You can direct a part of route 62 in two days to Barrydale, 246 km from Cape Town. Route 62 is a perfect escape option, if it is unpleasant and windy on the coast, you can go further inland and explore some cozy cities.

In Paarl do not cross the Huguenot tunnel, take the panoramic route Du Toits Kloof Pass. Stop in a couple of wine properties on the Breedekloof Wine Route, most offer free tasting. Stop for lunch and wine tasting in Nuy Winery, between Worcester and Robertson; a beautiful property, good wines, good food and desserts, incredible views. You can stop Montagu and relax in the mineral hot springs. If you want to explore Route 62 further, continue Barrydale. The trip between Montagu and Barrydale offers a very typical Platteland setting; wheat fields with occasional vineyards, road kiosks with local products and the endless road.

On the way back, you can make a short loop and drive to Paarl Bain's Kloof Pass, another beautiful pass with stunning views.
