At least seven returnees from Almajiri de Kaduna tested positive for COVID-19 in the state of Niger.
State Commissioner for Health and Hospital Services, Dr. Muhammad Makusidi, released this on Saturday.
He also said that the state recorded its first death with COVID-19, a 40-year-old diabetic taxi driver on the Suleja-Abuja route.
The deceased had given up soon upon his arrival at Suleja General Hospital.
The Commissioner said that a post-mortem sample was taken for testing and returned positive, emphasizing that the tracking of contacts will begin with immediate effect.
So far, the state of Niger has registered a total of 22 confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of Saturday night.
Makusidi on Saturday revealed that eight new cases were confirmed after the state sent 22 samples for testing to the Nigeria Disease Control Center.
Of these eight, seven are returned from Almajiri de Zaria, Kaduna state.
Several children in Almajiri tested positive for the virus, even when northern state governments try to return them to their parents amid the coronavirus pandemic.
