Samsung is reportedly building its own processors to power a new range of Windows 10 devices. These custom chipsets use the same Exynos brand as the chipsets used in some Galaxy S smartphones, such as the Galaxy S20 series sold in the UK. Samsung uses a mix of its own processors and Qualcomm Snapdragon to power its main smartphones, depending on the country.
Both chipsets are based on ARM, which is the same architecture that Apple uses for its own custom silicone. For years, Apple has used its own projects to power the iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch … but the Californian company has confirmed plans to launch its first Mac based on its own internal ARM-based chip before the end of the year.
The latest rumor suggests that Samsung has similar ambitions.
As reported by the often trusted Computer Bleeping blog, it looks like the new Windows 10 processor will be based on the Samsung Exynos 1000, which is due to be announced by the end of the year before its role in the Galaxy S21 in 2021. The turnaround in this silicon for Windows 10 can be marked as "Exynos 1 "- because it will be the first in a brand new series.
Samsung has already prototyped the Exynos 990 (the silicon inside the Galaxy S20 in select markets) for its Windows 10 PCs, Bleeping Computer said.
However, the company now plans to create an entirely new chip based on the next generation Exynos 1000 to offer better performance.
By changing the Samsung Galaxy Book line of chipsets designed by Intel to its own ARM-based processors, Samsung will have more control over the development of new features – allowing you to prioritize based on the products you would like to bring to the market. than what Intel's top bosses have decided should be the company's biggest focus.
So if Samsung wants to differentiate its Galaxy Book series from the competition, thanks to the long battery life, it can focus on that. Or, if it's surprisingly fast performance, that's another option open to the company.
Microsoft is also studying ARM-based architecture to help elevate its Windows 10 devices. The company has already launched Surface Pro X, which has 13 hours of battery life, 4G connections, so you don't have to look for a Wi-Fi network while working on the road, a 13.3-inch touchscreen – all this a device that measures 7.3 mm thick. For context, this is about 4 mm thinner than most Rolex watches. It's really thin.
As it is, running the Windows 10 operating system on ARM is limited to Qualcomm's Snapdragon-branded processors, so Microsoft will need to make some adjustments to ensure that Galaxy Books can run on Samsung's projects. However, as the Redmond-based company is also clearly looking to deviate from its dependence on Intel … this does not appear to be a major obstacle.
