No less than 1,872 alleged violators of COVID-19's preventive measures were arrested by the police in Lagos for violating social distance, banning interstate travel or nightfall until curfew.
In addition, the command seized 483 vehicles, 704 motorcycles and 73 tricycles in the past two weeks, spokesman Bala Elkana said in a statement on Sunday.
He said 20 of the seized vehicles were caught violating the interstate travel ban, adding that they had 152 passengers on board.
According to Elkana, the detainees were charged before the state's Mobile Court, adding that 1,833 defendants pleaded guilty to one charge and were convicted.
“The remaining 39 defendants pleaded not guilty and were arrested in police custody until the next postponed hearing date. 483 vehicles were seized, of which 398 are private vehicles, while 85 are commercial vehicles.
“20 of the seized commercial vehicles are intercepted across border communities on non-essential interstate trips with 152 passengers who were also arrested and charged in court.
“The Command was able to seize 704 motorcycles for violating the suspension order on commercial motorcycles issued by the governor. 73 Tricycles were seized for violating the curfew, ”he said.
