CAIRO (AP) – Pirates attacked a United Kingdom-flagged chemical ship off the coast of Yemen in the Gulf of Aden, Stolt Tankers said.
The ship's armed guards exchanged fire with two manned skiffs for six armed pirates, who approached the Stolt Apal at high speed, the company said in a statement.
The boat's guards deactivated a skiff and ended the chase. There were no injuries on board, and only the bridge area of the vessel suffered minor damage from bullets.
Stolt Apal was about 140 kilometers off the coast of Yemen when the attack occurred and has since resumed its journey.
This was the ninth reported attack in the Gulf of Aden this year, according to maritime security company Dryad Global.
Many ships transiting the Gulf of Aden have armed guards abroad because of the threat of piracy.
