Yesterday, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) urged the National Assembly to resume tomorrow, to urgently use its legislative instruments to invite President Muhammadu Buhari to address the deteriorating security situation in the country.

The party's position is based on the alarming report on the Global Terrorism Index of the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), which ranked Nigeria as the third country with the highest level of terrorism in 2019, after Iran and Afghanistan.

The PDP, in a statement signed by the National Advertising Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, said the report is distressing, especially as its indexes show that insecurity and deaths from acts of terrorism have increased in Nigeria, despite promises from the current government.

The party noted that the IEP classification further confirmed its position that the security of lives and property in the country went beyond what the security architecture of the Buhari administration, as currently composed, can guarantee.

According to the PDP, “our party postulates that the issue of security has gone beyond party and sectional sentiments, beyond propaganda and now requires a joint effort by all interested parties to require a review of the security structure and method by Mr President.

"The PDP, as a pan-Nigerian platform, urges the National Assembly to persuade the president to pay attention to sensible advice and to reject his high security command in order to inject new blood to meet our security challenges," said the chief. opposition party. . .

The party also urged the National Assembly to force President Buhari to take a decisive step in ordering the apprehension and repression of perpetrators of acts of terrorism, including the mass killing in Benue, Nasarawa, Bauchi, Taraba, Kogi, Adamawa, Borno, Yobe, Zamfara. , Kaduna, Ekiti states and other parts of the country under the current administration.

He said the failure to track down and prosecute the perpetrators of heinous crimes had continued to encourage looters, insurgents, bandits and kidnappers to further devastate communities and major highways, beheading countrymen, killing, maiming and taking innocent citizens en masse to the extent that nation has become the third with the highest level of terrorism in the world.

“In fact, this is not the way to go. Our party reaffirms that such a situation should not have been allowed to deteriorate and degenerate into that abyss ”.

While the PDP salutes the gallantry and patriotism of the troops who struggle and risk their lives daily on the fronts, the main opposition party has charged the National Assembly to use its legislative instruments to invite Buhari to an appropriate briefing as a prelude to a decisive step in the ensure adequate adequacy. security in the country.
