Jaguar Land Rover India has started taking reservations for the new generation of the Land Rover Defender SUV. Customers will receive deliveries from August 2020, with prices starting at Rs 69.99 lakh, ex-showroom. The iconic off-roader received an update from the ground up when it debuted worldwide at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
Defender of Indian specifications will come with a single engine option. This will be the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine in its P300 cover, with powers of 300 hp and 400 Nm. This will be paired with the JLR version of the automatic eight-speed ZF.
The three-door SWB 90 and five-door LWB 110 will be offered here, each with five trim levels. These will be Base, S, SE, HSE and First Edition. The Defender is being brought in as a CBU and will have notable features such as the 360 degree Surround Camera, Wade Sensing, Electronic Air Suspension (Standard 110), Smartphone Package, Connected Navigation Pro, Off-Road Tires, off tires -road, Central Console with cooling compartment (optional), among other things. Like the international version, the Indian specification car will be highly customizable, with a variety of seat combinations and accessory packages to choose from.
The new Defender is on the new D7X platform, not shared with any other Land Rover. This is the aluminum monocoque structure three times more rigid than cars with a body. The active axle suspension has also been replaced by an independent one, with air suspension available in higher finishes. In addition, the off-road capability is permanent all-wheel drive, a two-speed automatic gearbox, central differential and an optional active locking rear differential. Notable new off-road technology is the debut of the fully configurable Terrain Response system. The Land Rover's ground camera is also available, showing the area usually hidden by the hood. This new architecture offers Defender a ground clearance of 291 mm and angles of approach, departure and break of 38, 28 and 40 degrees, respectively, for version 110. There is also 900 mm of wading depth on offer through the new program wading in the Terrain Response 2 system. The Land Rover Defender will compete with the Jeep Wrangler in India.
