Arsenal’s need to improve the squad was highlighted by a 1-1 draw with Sheffield United at the weekend, which means Mikel Arteta has experienced just one Premier League victory.
While there have been some clear signs of improvement, there is still plenty of work to be done by the Spaniard – which could start in the January transfer window.
A host of names have already been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium during the mid-season, many of which are defenders given the club’s issues at the back.
Here, we’ve gathered some of the latest rumours and pieces of gossip floating around North London.
Kurzawa deal agreed
Arsenal have agreed a deal with Paris Saint-Germain defender Layvin Kurzawa with a five-year contract approved, France Football states.
The 27-year-old is out of contract in the French capital at the end of the season and will move to the Emirates Stadium on a free transfer, having been free to discuss a pre-contractual agreement with clubs outside of France this month.
Mikel Arteta is said to have been keen on bringing the full-back to the club and all signs are pointing towards a deal, although a signing bonus with Kurzawa is yet to be agreed.
Arsenal were not the only club in the hunt for the France international, with the report starting Inter Milan were also keen on his services.
Arteta’s Upamecano plan
Arsenal will push to sign Jerome Boateng from Bayern Munich this month but that will not stop their pursuit of Dayot Upamecano this summer, according to the Daily Star.
Arteta is keen to bolster his defensive options at the Emirates Stadium this month following Calum Chambers season-ending injury, with Boateng identified as the ideal short-term signing.
However, a deal for Boateng will reportedly be on loan, sparing Arsenal from his significant wages in the long-term, and the plan is to return for Upamecano in the summer.
Arsenal are plotting a £50m swoop for the RB Leipzig defender and are planning to partner the France ace with his compatriot William Saliba, currently on loan with St. Etienne.
Arsenal miss out on Reinier
Real Madrid have completed the signing of Flamengo talent Reinier having beaten the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal in the hunt, whom the Mirror state were battling for his signature.
The teenager turned 18 at the weekend and it was suggested that Arsenal had spoken to the teenager’s father last year – but it is the Spanish side who have emerged triumphant.
Reinier underwent a medical last week with Real believed to be paying around £25million for his signature and Real have agreed a six-and-a-half year deal with Reinier, keeping him at the club until 2026.
He becomes the latest Brazilian talent to move to the Santiago Bernabeu, following the captures of Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo in recent years.
