The president of the local government area of Amuwo Odofin in Lagos, Valentine Buraimoh, dismissed on Saturday reports on the alleged widespread cases of COVID-19 in the area such as misinformation and total falsehood.
Buraimoh, who made the clarification in a statement, asked residents in the area to disregard the reports.
The chairman of the board was responding to allegations on WhatsApp platforms that there are widespread cases of COVID-19 in the area.
The statement said: “My attention was drawn to a recorded audio report circulating from an unauthorized source on the alarming number of positive cases of COVID-19 at Amuwo Odofin LGA. It has become mandatory to make this address and official statement for the general benefit and safety of our personnel.
“First, the person who made and released the audio recording in question is not an authorized member of the local government team, nor is he an official with the NCDC (Center for Disease Control of Nigeria). Although she was hired as ad-hoc staff by the NCDC to work on an active case search in the local government area of Amuwo Odofin.
“The active case search interview was to identify people with symptoms similar to COVID-19 in the state of Lagos. These identified persons are subsequently screened to determine the number of positive cases
“The recorded voice message is not fully in line with the objective of active case research, which is to identify people with symptoms to enable them to qualify for screening and to know the number of COVID-19 patients in the LGA. "
