Kurt Cobain’s MTV Unplugged guitar up for $1m auction | Nirvana

The guitar used by Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain during the band famous MTV Unplugged concert in New York is under the hammer, with an initial estimate of $ 1 million (£ 810,000).

The 1959 Martin D-18E appeared on the grunge group's performance in November 1993, five months before Cobain's death at the age of 27.

Nirvana's Unplugged performance remains one of the band's best-known, while the accompanying album is widely acclaimed.

The guitar is the main item of the Music Icons event to be held at Julien's Beverly Hills auctions in June.

Darren Julien, president of the auction house, said: “Julien & # 39; s Auctions is proud to offer this historic guitar by Kurt Cobain, which has improved the music industry and pop culture in general with its mythical performance in front of Nirvana at MTV Unplugged in New York.

"This important guitar has earned its place in rock history as an instrument played by one of rock's most influential musicians and icons in one of the greatest and most memorable live performances of all time."

Cobain's guitar comes with the original hard case decorated by the singer and songwriter with a leaflet for the 1990 album by punk rock band Poison Idea, Feel the Darkness.

Three left-handed baggage claim tickets are attached to the handle, along with an Alaska Airlines sticker affixed to the case. The storage compartment contains the set of guitar strings, picks and a suede bag from Cobain.

Along with the Unplugged guitar, the sale of Music Icons will feature other Nirvana lots, including a Fender Strat worn by Cobain during the 1994 In Utero tour and the silver lamé shirt he wore in the band's Heart-Shaped Box video.

Last year, the cardigan he wore during the Unplugged performance was sold at Julien's auctions for a record $ 334,000.

The Music Icons auction will take place live and online in Beverly Hills on June 19 and 20.
