Kane wins 1,000 points and Blackhawks beat Jets 5-2

CHICAGO (AP) – Patrick Kane achieved 1,000 career points by receiving assistance in Brandon Saad's third period goal, and the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Winnipeg Jets 5-2 on Sunday night for their fifth consecutive win at the peak of the season.

Kane became the 90th player in NHL history to reach the milestone with 5:46 left. The All-Star winger passed from behind the net to Ryan Carpenter in the right circle. Carpenter then fed an open Saad on the left side of the net for easy access before goalkeeper Connor Hellebuyck could slide down the crease.

A 31 years old Kane he received a prolonged standing ovation from the crowd of 21,487 and was harassed by teammates after extending his point streak to 10 games. Saad made a point of picking up the record before joining the celebration.

Alex Nylander and Erik Gustafsson had a goal and an assist for Chicago, who returned to the Western Conference playoff race with an 11-4-0 run. David Kampf also scored and newcomer Dominik Kubalik added an empty goalkeeper for his tenth goal in the last seven games.

Mark Scheifele and Patrik Laine scored for Winnipeg. Hellebuyck stopped 28 shots in the Jets' fourth defeat in five games.

Robin Lehner made 36 saves for the Blackhawks, who killed six Jets' strength shots. Four of the male advantages were created by small penalties in Chicago striker Drake Caggiula.

Chicago led 2-0 after the first period.

Nylander opened the scoring at 2:51. Alone in front of the net, Nylander took Gustafsson's ration, pointed Hellebuyck to the ice and slid into a backhander on the left.

Gustafsson took the sixth, with 5:49, in a high kick from the left point that went through Hellebuyck's glove and hit the right post.

Lehner was clear in blocking nine shots when the Blackhawks killed a four-minute play on the Jets at the start of the second. Caggiula had been whistled for interference and unsportsmanlike conduct.

Scheifele reduced to 2-1 with 1:43 remaining in the second on the 27th Jets shot.

Scheifele crossed the traffic to the network and picked up the puck at the edge of the crease, after Nikolaj Ehlers partially ventilated a kick from inside the blue line. Lehner interrupted Scheifele's first attempt, but he recovered with a backhander for his 23rd goal.

Kampf increased Chicago's lead to 3-1 at 9:29 in the third. Rookie Kirby Dach hit the net and was stopped by Hellebuyck, but Kampf passed defender Anthony Bitetto and nudged the rebound.

After Saad's 4-1 goal, Laine took a chance at close range at 2:09.

Kubalik fired into an empty net at 1:34 of the match.

Blackhawks: Stay in Florida on Tuesday. Panteras coach Joel Quenneville will face his former team for the first time. Quenneville guided the Blackhawks to three Stanley Cup titles in more than 10 seasons, but was fired in November 2018.
