Kao Lor and his uncle Lee Lor were traveling across the state on their way to get a car when they stopped to get a room at a Super 8 Motel in the city of Plymouth, in northern Indiana.
After entering the hotel, Kao Lor says that an employee asked if he was Chinese. Lor started recording the meeting. In the video, a man who later identified himself as an employee asks Lor if he is Chinese, and when Lor asks why he needs to know, the man replies, "Have you heard of the coronavirus?"
The comings and goings continue between Lor and the man with the hotel clerk, later saying "If you are from China, I need to know".
When Lor asks why, the man said he was told that "anyone from China has been caught and quarantined for two weeks". The employee tells Lor that it is a company policy.
Eventually, Lor and her uncle decided to try another hotel.
When CNN contacted the Super 8 for comment, an employee made the following statement: "The Wyndham Plymouth Super 8 is aware of a viral video. The views and what the employee said are not the view and policy of the Wyndham Plymouth Super 8. Management is dealing with the employee involved. We are deeply saddened and ashamed of our employee's action. "
At the second hotel, a Days Inn, Lor began by recording the meeting and asking the hotel employee if Asians cannot stay there. The man seems to recognize that Asians are not being allowed.
Lor asks the man why and the man seems to say because of the virus.
CNN approached Dharmendra Patel, the owner of the Days Inn, and asked if the hotel was excluding Asians. Patel replies, "No. This is something we are dealing with."
When asked if the employee involved had been disciplined, Patel says, "We didn't suspend him, but we fired him some time ago."
Wyndham Hotels, which franchises the Days Inn and Super 8 brands, released the following statement to CNN:
"We are deeply concerned about these incidents as they do not reflect our values or our franchisees' expectations. Although these locations are owned and operated individually, it is important to note that the corporate policy mentioned in the video does not exist. .
"Please know that we are taking this matter seriously and are talking to the owners of the two hotels. We are also working to contact this guest to offer our sincere apologies and we will extend a gesture of goodwill to help correct things. . "
