Facebook is trying to save us from the embarrassment of our older posts. The social network has announced a series of new tools designed to hide older posts from its younger self, without permanently deleting them.
Facebook says its new "Manage Activity" setting will help people better control their presence on Facebook. In a blog post about the new tools – designed to protect users' privacy – Facebook stated: "We know that posts from people years ago may not represent who they are now – for example, the university's old Facebook status. This tool allows you to move posts that you want to hide from others, but stay in a file and remove the posts that you want to delete. "
In addition to making it easier to hide posts from curious friends – or potential employers, Facebook also makes it easier to discover older status updates, photos and videos.
Starting today, users will be able to filter posts by person and by period, which will make it easier to read and quickly organize old posts.
"We believe that people should have the ability to manage and control their data, and we will continue to develop new ways to honor people's privacy by providing greater transparency and control," added Facebook.
The new tools are being released today and will be available on the iOS and Android apps. The lightweight Facebook Lite app, designed to take up less storage on your device and work with slower mobile Internet connections for developing countries, will also appreciate the change. Unfortunately, there is no information on when or if it will be available to those who log in using a standard web browser.
Facebook is having a few busy weeks, with the company recently unveiling an entirely new look. The long-awaited redesign was launched to users around the world last month and not only looks different, it also brings an enhanced experience.
Facebook says it has made it easier to find what you're looking for faster with the new streamlined navigation. This means that it should be faster to find videos, games and groups, as well as faster page transitions. Users can also activate Dark Mode, which reduces screen glare, ideal for those who enjoy Facebook a bit at night.
Finally, it is now easy to create Facebook events, pages, groups and ads, as well as being able to view a new group you are starting in real time and see what it looks like on your mobile phone before creating it.
