Coronavirus US live: Trump administration reportedly expects daily death toll to double in June | World news

[The Trump administration] is projecting in particular a steady increase in the number of coronavirus cases and deaths in the coming weeks, reaching about 3,000 daily deaths on June 1, according to an internal document obtained by The New York Times, almost double the current level of about 1,750.

The projections, based on modeling by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and assembled in graph form by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, predicted about 200,000 new cases per day by the end of the month, up from 25,000 cases today.

The figures underscore a worrying reality: although the United States has crouched in the past seven weeks, little has changed. And the reopening of the economy will make things worse.
