The military said one of the top commanders of the Boko Haram terror group, Abu Usamah, was killed by troops in Gorgi, a local government area in Damboa in the state of Borno.
Usamah, according to a statement by Interim Director of Defense Media Operations, Brigadier-General Benard Onyeuko, was among the terrorists killed by Operation Lafiya Dole troops during a subsidiary operation known as Ayiso Tamonuma.
He said the deceased terrorist died of gunshot wounds, having suffered gunshot wounds during the encounter with the troops.
According to the statement, “it should be remembered that on March 22, 2020, troops from Operation LAFIYA DOLE, while carrying out a special release operation in a subsidiary operation called Operation AYISO TAMONUMA, decimated some of the main elements of Boko Haram in a meeting in Gorgi, in Damboa. LGA of the state of Borno.
“In our previous Press Briefing, we reported more than 100 Boko Haram insurgents neutralized while dozens of them escaped with gunshot wounds. In addition to several equipment victims suffered by Boko Haram insurgents.
“As an update to this report, it is gratifying to note that the very interception of communication confirmed by accurate information revealed that one of Boko Haram's top commanders, * ABU USAMAH *, was among the Boko Haram insurgents killed during that meeting.
“He had already suffered fatal gunshot wounds in the shooting that followed during the encounter, before his foot soldiers hurriedly evacuated him and retired. However, Abu Usamah died in the process.
"His death has undoubtedly created a consequent vacuum in the leadership of Boko Haram, especially since the gallant troops remain resilient and continue to direct criminal elements from their last enclaves in the northeast"
The statement added that: “In another development, the troops of the 159 Task Force Battalion, Operation LAFIYA DOLE deployed at the Kanama Advanced Operational Base, Yunusari LGA of Yobe State, neutralized dozens of terrorist insurgents in Boko Haram / State Province West African Muslims who tried to infiltrate on March 27, 2020.
“The terrorists were severely decimated by our gallant ground troops supported by the aerial component of Operation LAFIYA DOLE. They withdrew in disarray under superior firepower and were later crushed by their own troops.
“In addition, during the meeting, several terrorists were neutralized, while a gun truck and various weapons and ammunition were captured by the troops. These include; a DSHK pistol, 2 AK 47 rifles, 2 AK 47 shotgun magazines, a rocket-propelled grenade bomb, 273 rounds of anti-aircraft ammunition, 101 rounds of 7.62 mm (NATO) ammunition, 15 jerricans from Premium Motor Spirit and a Boko Haram Flag of terrorists.
“Meanwhile, the Military High Command congratulated the gallant troops for their resilience, courage and dedication to the noble cause of defending our homeland against criminal elements. They were likewise ordered to stand firm and unforgiving against the enemies of our nation. ”
