The game was Awoniyi's tenth Bundesliga game for Mainz since the Liverpool loan transfer.
With the defeat, Mainz went on to 16th with 28 points and currently occupies the relegation play-off.
In addition, Mainz remains unbeaten in the last seven games (three defeats, four draws).
At Olympiastadio Berlin, Hertha Berlin beat Augsburg 2-0 with Noah-Joel Sarenren-Bazee in action.
Sarenren-Bazee was on the field from the start, before leaving the field nine minutes into the game.
Hertha Berlin opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, by Javairo Dilrosun, before Krzysztof Piatek doubled the advantage in the 90th minute.
Augsburg occupies 14th place with 31 points in the 18-team table.
In other Bundesliga games, Schalke 04 lost 1-0 at home to Werder Bremen and Eintracht Frankfurt beat Wolfsburg 2-1 at home.
