APC NWC approves direct primaries for Edo election

National President of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, says the party's National Labor Committee (NWC) has passed direct primaries for Edo government research.

Oshiomhole said this on Monday at a news conference after meeting with the APC Governors Forum, led by Kebbi Governor Abubakar Bagudu, at the party's National Secretariat in Abuja.

He added that the NWC of the party has not yet discussed and decided on the primary mode for the July 20 government election in Ondo.

“Since then, we have published our schedule because, according to the law, we are required to notify the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at least 21 days in advance to monitor our primaries.

“And to declare the mood of our primaries, and, of course, the NWC approved direct primaries for Edo.
"Ondo's was not discussed because it will come much later, because Edo will come about three weeks before Ondo," said the party president.

He said the party had started selling forms of expression of interest and nomination, adding that other processes were also going well.

“We started selling forms, I think that last Friday, to my knowledge, three people chose them.

“I think that even today more people have chosen the forms. Therefore, we are selling forms to all those who wish to purchase based on the guidelines.

“And, of course, as the President of the Progressive Governors rightly said, we guaranteed in our letter to INEC and until this morning we had a virtual meeting with INEC's leadership.

“We will hold primaries taking into account the Covid-19 protocols by the Presidential Task Force (PTF) and the Nigeria Disease Control Commission (NCDC). I think everything is going well – he said.

According to him, governors are an asset of our party and, when a candidate emerged, we all work and ensure that we do our best to convince people in their respective states to favor us with their votes.

“I am sure that, by God's special grace, the governor of Ondo is here, he has done well and the electorate is more sophisticated now, so we are not afraid of that.

“Obaseki is not here, but primary issues are well described in our constitution and we are following them as strictly as possible. So nothing to worry about, ”said Oshiomhole.

Bagudu said earlier that the purpose of the meeting was to discuss issues between the Governor's Forum and the party leadership that would lead to APC progress. (NAN)
